I want to create an Academy that gets to the heart and power of Jazz through its roots and history. The infectious rhythm, melody and invention inspires in an environment of cooperation and encouragement. The Academy's mission is to be true to this great music.
Julian Joseph, Founder and Artistic Director
Opening in January 2013, The Julian Joseph Jazz Academy (JJJA) is a weekly Academy under the artistic direction of internationally renowned jazz pianist and composer Julian Joseph. It offers talented young instrumentalists and vocalists aged 12+, an amazing opportunity to work with some of the world’s top jazz musicians. Students will develop their creative talents and performance skills through exploring the distinct American roots of Jazz, its great works and musicians, and jazz’s relationship to other disciplines.
Differentiating JJJA from other jazz offerings is its focus on developing ensembles and focusing on core repertoire, artists and genres as starting points for exploration and musical discovery. JJJA’s curriculum includes:
• Real Jazz Notes – The Art of Improvisation
• The Language of Truth: Finding the Voice of Jazz
• Jazz Democracy – Discipline of the Sideman
• Rhythmic Fundamentals – Core Principles of jazz.
• Jazz Roots and Legends – Jazz through its History
A range of master classes from outstanding celebrity guests will supplement the core curriculum with performance opportunities to work with JJJA artists at venues such as Kings Place and Ronnie Scott’s.
