November’s Yamaha Download is focused on drums as Radio 2’s Richard Allinson takes you through the latest news from Yamaha HQ in the UK, with exclusive interviews, gear demos and live music.
As well as being Brit Award nominated this year, Elbow won a Mercury Music Prize for ‘Seldom Seen Kid’, their 4th and entirely self produced album. Their drummer Richard ‘Jupp’ opens the programme with news of their current tour, the gear he takes on the road and background to the processes used to produce their latest album.
The very cool Yamaha PHX – Phoenix drum kit is the featured product. We put the £5000 super kit through its paces, live from LA, with the help of Cher, Natalie Cole and Tina Turner’s session man, Russ Miller.
Nominated this year as one of only four finalists for the best female solo artist category at the 2008 ‘Indy Awards’, this months ‘Band For A Grand’ is lead by singer, Katie Skilling. Having already worked with producer Steve Lironi, (Happy Mondays / Bon Jovi) and Gary Bromham (Sheryl Crow, Bjork) Katie plays an exclusive session in the Yamaha ‘Artist Suite’ using only Yamaha equipment with a retail value of no more than £1000. At the end of the competition, voted for on line by Yamaha Download users, the wining band walks away with a day in a top UK recording studio, and one listener who has voted wins all the gear used in the competition.
The legendary Dave Weckl closes the programme. As one of ‘Modern Drummer’ magazines 25 best players of all time he’s worked with the likes of Simon & Garfunkle, Chick Korea, Diana Ross and Robert Plant, to name but a few, and breaks off from a Tour with the Mike Stern Band to talk the new Yamaha PHX Phoenix drum kit, touring and sessions.
