About Acoustic Violins

About acoustic violins

It is a string instrument with a long history that plays the principal role in orchestral performances. One theory is that violin originated with Mongolia's matouqin. It can also be described as an instrument that is integrated with the world's various kinds of ethnic music as well as classical music.

Violin history dates from before Christ

The basis of the modern violin was formed in Italy after the early 16th century. The full details, however, are not yet known, and remain veiled in mystery. Surprisingly, the origin of string instruments played with a bow dates back to the time before Christ. Since there are lots of differently-shaped instruments with various names for each player or instrument maker, it is very difficult to describe its history in a systematic manner. It was in 1607 (Monteverdi's 'Orfeo' in the court of Duke of Mantova) that an orchestra organised centring on the violin first appeared in Europe.

Birth of virtuoso violinists and master violinmakers

There are several theories regarding the current name 'violin', and it is thought in Italy that the name comes from 'Soprano “viola for the arm (viola da braccio)”'. In Italy in the 17th century, there were great violinmakers such as Nicolò Amati, Antonio Stradivari, and Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù. Many of the instruments made by them have been repaired in some way, and unfortunately, there are few existing in their complete original state. In the end of the 18th century, violins were made mainly in France. Improved by English violinmakers, as well as the French, the prototype of the modern violin was completed around 1800. That was also when virtuoso violinists such as Paganini were born.

Mechanism for producing a wide variety of tones

The violin, whose tone is said to sound like the human voice, has a musical range spanning over four octaves, and enables you to give a wide variety of renditions by producing quarter tones and double-stops for unusual and subtle changes in tone colouration. The four strings are tuned in fifths. Lately, steel strings and synthetic fibre wrapped with thin aluminium wires are often used. You produce sound by rubbing the strings, stretched across a bridge standing on the body, with a bow strung with horse-hair or by plucking with the fingers (pizzicato). The body of the violin is hollow. It is designed to conduct the string vibrations from the peg to the table, and effectively vibrate the whole body through the sound post between the table and the back. The key to purchasing your first violin is to making sure it is free from essential failures. It may be hard to try out violins in stores when you choose from multiple options because it takes years to produce a good sound with the violin. So it would be best to choose with a person of experience, if possible.
