The acclaimed Italian composer and pianist Cesare Picco has partnered Yamaha in producing a beautifully directed short film which charts the journey in creating Yamaha’s flagship CFX concert grand from the tree to the stage.

Internationally known for his pioneering and experimental approach to his music, this philosophy is very apparent throughout “Spirit of the Piano”. The video depicts the relationship between the unique traditions and culture of Japan and the instrument, at the same time providing a unique and thoughtful insight into the country itself.

Cesare Picco says: “This is the story of my love for the piano and for a special country that has radically changed my way of making music. In fact it's a pleasure to think that in Japanese culture everything has its own spirit. Therefore also the piano, which is a living instrument created by human intelligence with different selected grain, has a spirit inside. With this video I gave it a voice and I can give a sense to my quest while I'm learning from the instrument itself”.

The film also portrays the very special landscape of Japan whilst successfully capturing the intimate and often intense processes central to the successful production of Yamaha’s finest piano. It also manages to portray the deep relationship between the artist, the instrument and the highly skilled artisans that create the CFX.

“Spirit of the Piano” culminates with a performance in the stunning surroundings of the Katsuragi Kitanomaru the ancient house of the Samurai.
