Hailing from beautiful Cornwall, he began his musical life in the county's renowned brass bands and subsequently studied at the Birmingham School of Music. On turning professional he became Principal Trumpet at Opera North, moving to the Bournemouth Symphony and onto the Philharmonia in 1990.
